Welcome to the PNP Members site !

PNP Members note:  Bulk emails (those to all of us in a “blast” from the PNP Coordinator) are now originating from a different email server.  This seems to be causing those important announcements to end up in the Spam folder for many of us.

If you believe you are missing messages, please check the Spam folder on your email client and and consider whitelisting the sender name “system@ecemail.samaritan.com” which is where those bulk emails are originating after an upgrade at the City.

Agendas for PNP City Wide meetings (3rd Tuesday of the month) can be found on the “documents” page.  Next Meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 from 6PM to 8PM.

Item of interest for PNP Members………

Join the Phoenix Block Watch Advisory Board on January 26, 2021 for a presentation and discussion on the implications of the passage of Proposition 207 which allows recreational use of Marijuana in Arizona.

Meeting details to be available soon here or on the Phoenix Block Watch Advisory Board website.

Announcements

Announcements for January 7

Good afternoon PNP Members

Happy first week of the new year

Mileage Reimbursement Rate change

The IRS updated the mileage reimbursement rate beginning January 1, 2021, to 56 cents a mile. I spoke with the BW grant staff and we will be adjusting the mileage reimbursement rate on the report to reflect this change for all patrol time from 1-1-2021 forward.  Any reimbursement reports for patrol time done from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020 will still use the old rate of 57.5 Cents a mile.

Also, a reminder that the grant staff will no longer accept the old handwritten Mileage Reimbursement logs, all PNP patrols for mileage reimbursement must be recorded using the online program.  I was told that they have received a few of the handwritten forms recently.

Clothing Orders

Our clothing supplier has informed me of a slight change they will need to make in order to keep our costs down.  They no longer have a “garment printer” (think giant ink jet printer for clothing) they use to have where they could easily print one or 2 shirts at a time, they have had to change to “screen printing.”  This means that each time they start a PNP order they must “set up” new screens, one for each color to print the order. Many places that do screen printing have a minimum order because of this. Our supplier plans on grouping “smaller” PNP orders together to save on the “set up” cost and time. They say they will still be able to fill most orders within 7 to 10 days depending on delivery of blank shirts from their supplier. They said much of their wait time is waiting to get the blank shirts from their supplier (several are on back order as I write this).

I am looking into the possibility of maintaining a small supply of the screen printed PNP clothing on hand in the more common sizes. That way I can fill small orders from this supply quickly and replenish as they are sold.  The challenge is storage space and funds for upfront costs.  (a topic for the monthly meeting)

One last update on PNP clothing, our supplier said PNP’s 2021 costs will stay the same, reserving the right to change prices later if they have significant price increase from their suppliers.  The 2021 PNP clothing order form has been updated on the web page.

Both the clothing and vehicle sign order forms are attached.

Monthly Citywide PNP Meetings

For the foreseeable future we will continue to meet virtually and will continue to meet on the third Tuesday of the month from 6pm to 8pm.  I am making a new reoccurring meeting in Webex for the upcoming year, so it will be the same meeting number each time.

If at some point, we are given the ok the meet in-person again, I plan on continuing to offer the virtual platform for people who want to join that way.

The next meeting is January 19, 2021 from 6pm to 8pm. Login details to follow later

PNP Basic Classes for 2021

The 2021 flyers should be attached to this email and I have sent them to our Web Detail to update phoenix.gov.  If you manage your own web page, please update them with this info.

The classes will continue to be virtual for the foreseeable future, and we will continue with the 2-day 2-hours each day format. The dates are as follows:

January 20 & 21
March 17 & 18
May 19 & 20
July 21 & 22
September 22 & 23
November 17 & 18

Please share with your friends and neighbors who might be interested in the program.

Anyone wishing to attend must register at pnp.coordinator@phoenix.gov to receive the login information and other needed documents.

PNP log Sheets

The city Manager’s Office has asked me to provide them our final 2020 PNP numbers by January 11th.  I would normally ask you all to get your hours in now, but as of yesterday and still this morning the program in not working right again.

What to look for? If you enter a log sheet and type a number into either the Patrol Hours or Admin Hours fields and the other field also populates, the program is still not working right.

I have a tech request in, hopefully we get this fixed soon.

Updates on Volunteer.phoenix.gov

New videos are being uploaded to the PNP YouTube channel as we make them. There will be links to these on PNPMembers.com as well.

We are still working out the bugs on the updated program. It seems with each “fix” is a new problem, I am told they have a fix for the hours reporting as “zeros” on the dashboard and that should be in place soom.  Below are some of the current issues and some solutions identified so far.  Beware I translated some of these from the IT folk’s computer speak into English as I understand what they told me.

Issue 1, Out of date internet program

  • It seems the program does not work well with the older versions of Internet Explorer, besides Microsoft is phasing that program out. Use the latest version or other options like Microsoft Edge (replacement for Explorer) Chrome or Firefox.
  • Issue 2, Saved favorites or bookmarks
    • Your saved favorite might be directing your computer to a page associated to the old program (Cache memory issue). Yes, I know I told everyone to save the site to your favorites or bookmark it.
    • Do not use your old, saved favorite, instead type the URL in, volunteer.phoenix.gov
    • Issue 3, Trouble Logging In
      • Most likely related to one of the 2 issues above, try those first.
      • If the above does not resolve the issue, send an email to PNP.coordinator@phoenix.gov
    • Issue 4, hours not displaying
      • Dashboard (new front page) shows 0 hours for month, year and for all time for members.
      • We now know why they are not displaying, and IT is working out the best solution to fix this.
      • The old log sheets are still there, and I can pull a report if you need it from the administrator side.
      • You can verify your hours by doing the following. When logged in from the dashboard select “View Service History” (upper right side of page) and a list of your logs will display. Go to one of the logs and select “More Details”, this will display the actual hours you entered. You can verify your hours are there.

Much of the updated program works like the old program, but with an updated look and a few things have been moved around. With some patience you should be able to use the program without too much trouble.

The program has a few new required fields, when you go to “edit my profile” to make any changes, like updating your password, you will now have to fill out these required field, if you have not entered those in the past. Nothing too painful but you will not be able to save until all the required fields are filled in.

Good afternoon PNP members

Monthly Meeting

Reminder next Tuesday is the monthly PNP Meeting. Unlike past years where our December meeting was a holiday party, this year we are still meeting using Webex (darn COVID-19). I have asked my command staff to try and stop in if possible and my commander is working with the chief’s office.  No promises, however.

The meeting is from 6pm to 8pm, Tuesday, December 15, 2020.  Send an email to Brian if you did not get the link.

      • They are still working on this one, from the admin side where I work, I can see everyone’s hours. For some reason they are not being listed on the dashboard or to the detailed summary screen.
      • You can verify your hours by doing the following. When logged in from the dashboard select “View Service History” (upper right side of page) and a list of your logs will display. Good afternoon PNP members

Volunteer.phoenix.gov

On Monday night they updated the volunteer.phoenix.gov site as promised. It now has a new look, but your login info will be the same.  Some features have moved a bit and once the dust settles on this upgrade, I will post something highlighting the changes.

This upgrade had a few glitches, some have been resolved, some have temporary fixes and others are still being addresses (this is why I will wait to highlight the new features). I am told all of our old log entries are still there, I can actually pull up old log sheets. One of the glitches right now is when you log in the new dashboard shows you have Zero hours entered (if you select “View Service History” your log sheets are listed so we know the data is there).  Don’t let this worry you it is being fixed.

I tried an email blast last night to let everyone know but that apparently did not go out (another glitch?) I never got my confirmation message that the email blast was successful and after checking with a few of you if seems it did not go out.  I am trying this again today since they have made strides in fixing the glitches, fingers crossed this one works.

Season of Safety

Thanksgiving to New Years is normally the time of our Season of Safety (SoS) program. As with most of 2020 things are not normal and we have no organized SoS patrols. If you are still able to patrol and you have obtained permission to patrol your local shopping centers and malls, please try to spend some of your patrol time there.

Also, this is the season where the “porch pirates” are out in force picking up packages left at houses by the busy delivery folks. When patrolling your areas remember to keep an eye open for people who are following the delivery trucks or that may be driving around looking for packages.  Report these to 911 or Crime Stop depending on what exactly is happening, be the good witnesses you are.

Hope everyone had a healthy and safe Thanksgiving

BW Grants and PNP Merchandise Prices

The Neighborhood Block Watch Grant Application process opened earlier this week. Many of you might be putting in to buy PNP shirts or magnetic signs on these grants and will need projected prices. Links to 2020 PNP order forms are on the grant programs webpage (also on PNP and PBWAB pages). I have reached out to our suppliers for their 2021 price lists.

Our clothing supplier said they will not be able to provide a 2021 list until closer to 2021 if not early 2021.

The magnetic sign supplier said they have had about an 8% increase in prices from their suppliers and provide me with a projected 2021 pricelist (2021 order form is attached).

The metal PNP “street” signs will remain the same price, $16, at least until we run out of stock. We will do our best to keep them at this cost if possible. We are testing some metal signs from a different supplier for fade resistance, if these work out we will work on prices for these.

PNP Classes

All in-person classes and meetings are still on hold for the foreseeable future.

The next virtual Basic PNP class will be November 18-19, 2020 from 5pm to 7pm each day.

Anyone interested in attending this class or any future PNP classes should send an email to PNP.Coordinator@phoenix.gov

We are finalizing our 2021 schedule and it will be published shortly.

Monthly Citywide PNP Meeting

The next monthly PNP meeting will be Tuesday, November 17, 2020, from 6pm to 8pm. We will continue to hold these meetings virtually using the Webex platform. Login info will be sent as the meeting gets closer.

Volunteer.phoenix.gov

Changes are coming to the volunteer database, the administrator side will be updated at the end of this month with the user’s side (the side you all use) will be updated sometime after that (no date given yet). The changes on the user’s side will be mostly visual what they are calling a “fresh look”, the login page will look differently, and there will be some changes in layout of other pages to make them easier to navigate. All of your records and log entries will be retained. Just letting you know so you are not surprised when it happens.

Phoenix Neighborhood Patrol 2019 Awards

The following are the recipients of the 2019 PVSA pins and the 2019 PNP 50-hour pins. Since COVID-19 has caused us to cancel all in-person meetings and events including the annual luncheon we have been unable to present the awards. We are publishing the lists to recognize the recipients of these awards even if we cannot present the awards in person. We plan on distributing the awards once we can meet in person again.

Presidents Volunteer Service Awards Program (PVSA)

This is a separate nationwide volunteer program that some PNP members choose to participate in addition to the PNP program.

Announcements for October 21

PNP Classes
All classes are currently only being offered virtually using the WebEx platform. Attendees must pre-register at pnp.coordinator@phoenix.gov. We have been given no timeline on when we can resume in-person meetings or classes.

Spanish PNP Basic Class

this is not a bilingual class it will be in Spanish only

PNP Basic Class

2021 schedule
We are currently working on our 2021 class schedule. I hope to have it approved and out very soon.

Block Watch Grants

The grant application process should be opening early in November. Go to their webpage www.phoenix.gov/police/resources-information/block-watch-grants for details, as of today it has not been updated for the 2021 application. See PNP Radio update below. I also sent them a request to update the PNP form links on their page, it too is out of date.

PNP Logs

Thanks to everyone who got their logs in before the quarterly report went into the City Manager’s Office.

PNP is doing well considering the challenges of COVID. Keep up the good work!

Community Meetings

Many community groups have gone to virtual meetings due to the COVID restrictions. I have been fortunate to be invited to a few. I am impressed with the turnout at these “newfangled” meetings, although many of you might not be too comfortable with virtual meetings you have stepped up for the good of your communities. Thank you.

I you would like me to attend your meeting, send me an invite, invite your local CAO’s too. I will do my best to attend.

Virtual Coffee With a Cop

We are still working on getting this organized.  I have not given up on the idea. More info to come.

Updates and Info Shared by PNP Members

Political Activity on HOA Governed Properties

Many HOA properties in Phoenix forbid “soliciting” on their properties. Does this include “Political Canvassing”? Arizona Revised Statutes (ARS) spells out what HOA’s can and cannot do regarding limiting political activity. Attached is an excerpt of the ARS section that covers this. (provided by a PNP member).  More Information on this.

Updates on PNP Radio and Accessory Prices

This could be timely info for anyone looking to apply for grant funds for next year that might include PNP radios or accessories for those radios like replacement batteries.

I will not retype the pricelist since I have been known to make a typo or two. The price sheet is attached. If what you are looking for is not listed, please contact the company directly, his name and contact info is on the price list.

Do not forget to calculate in the tax when submitting your budget.

**Monthly Citywide PNP Virtual Meeting Cancelled**

I have been assigned another work detail for the evening of our October Citywide PNP Meeting, October 20, 2020, therefore I must cancel this meeting. We will plan on meeting again on our normal meeting night the following month, November 17, 2020.

Since I have to cancel the meeting, I plan on sending out an email blast that week with any updates or news I would have shared at the meeting. If any of you have something to share, please email it to me so I can include it in the email blast.

Thanks for understanding.

Virtual PNP Classes

We just finished our last scheduled virtual PNP class. I will be working on scheduling a few more before the end of the year, this includes, Basic PNP class, a Spanish Basic PNP class and Radar classes. More info to follow as we get them scheduled.

Block Watch Grants

The 1st quarter of this year’s grant has ended, the quarterly reports are due by October 15. If you need any PNP millage reports please let me know early, I am assigned to work the Faith and Blue Conferences coming up right before the deadline and might not be available to get to them right away as it gets closer to the conferences.

PNP Logs

As I mentioned above the 1st quarter has ended, I have been asked by the City Manager’s Office to get PNP’s quarterly report of hours in before October 16. Please make sure your log sheets for July, August and September 2020 are in before October 15, so I can pull the numbers and send the report in on time. Feel free to catch up on any older log sheets too.

GAIN and GAIN Kick Off

In case you have not heard, the city has postponed GAIN Kick Off and our participation in GAIN events until, ok, we do not know exactly but sometime later, possibly next year. GAIN Kick Off was scheduled for this upcoming Saturday, it has been cancelled.

Stay Safe!

This site is provided exclusively for information sharing related to your: neighborhood, patrols, PNP activities, block watch, newsletters and projects, precinct and citywide… And all for your education.

This site is managed 100% by volunteer PNP help under the guidance and leadership of Detective Brian Kornegay, Citywide PNP Coordinator.

Funding for real expense, such as annual site hosting, software and our register domain expenses is assisted by our PNP, Phoenix Neighborhood Block Watch Grants.

This site provides a citywide communication tool for members to create friendships and share questions, experiences and successes.

Additional information is available via the “training” menu above.

What is PNP?

Phoenix Police officers train PNP members in a four hour class.

PNP members are taught to know:

  • Their neighbors!
  • Their neighborhood!
  • How to patrol with success by recognizing differences.

Because they view their neighborhood repeatedly, PNP Members recognize patterns.

They are trained to recognize differences between ALL things, people, vehicles, changes in properties and traffic, and they may see and recognize differences as not normal!

They know what has changed! And, are trained to know, if necessary, how to call for Police, and to communicate efficiently with 911 center personnel.

There is fun, enjoyment and a sense of purpose that accompanies your involvement with the PNP program.

In addition to helping make your own neighborhood a safer place, one of our group patrol event activities is the “First Friday” at Roosevelt and 5th St Phoenix, Az. We patrol, and report crowd problems to “Command” with special radios, and if needed, the Phoenix Police dispatcher then relays the report to local officers on the beat and is managed as needed.

The image above is from one of our patrols and was taken by Jerry Cline, a COPS and PNP volunteer for many years.

All patrolling and administrative time spent with PNP is done on a volunteer basis.  You contribute time as you are able once trained.

This website and associated costs are partly funded by the City of Phoenix Neighborhood Block Watch grant program.  This comes from your tax dollars so remember to “Shop Phoenix” so taxes you pay continue to support programs such as ours.
